COSC Policies, Resources, Plagiarism Pages

We may want to re-thing the format of the COSC Policies, Resources, Plagiarism, and Getting Started pages. While we can make some (not all) of them open in new windows, we were able to make them open inside of the BB7 shell, hence the _header.cfm files. Perhaps Lauren should begin working on standalone webpages for these pages?

  1. That was "re-think" not "re-thing." Daaa!

Indeed, we may need to do that. We may be able to use the Course Files feature to host these pages and then link to them within each course. There's some aspect of the Course Files feature called "Institutional Files" that we could use. Let's check that out this afternoon and then decide which avenue to use.

  3. That idea came from this post to the Bb listserv:

    ------

Set up the files you want to be in every course in the "Institutional
Content" area of your content system.
Then set up a Template course which links to all the appropriate content in
the correct ways - ie item with link to appropriate file (and contains
assignments if you wish - although they wont be centrally updateable).

Now when you create a course based on the template using snapshot it will
create a course with items and assessments. All the files that are attached
will link to your main "Institutional Content" folder that you setup
earlier. If you make a change to a file then it will change in ALL the courses.
(Sadly I cant get it so that the text of the item description will change -
I suggest making the title and descriptions very generic and keeping the
meat of what you want to say in the files which you CAN change).

  4. After looking at it more, it appears that these pages open in the BB9 environment, just not within the content frame. The breadcrumbs are at the top of the page. We may only need to modify the image(s) and remove the gray bar in the _header.cfm pages that currently exist for BB7.

  5. Follow up: I successfully built a simple Course File at the Institutional Level (which, btw, can be locked so no other users can change it besides administrators). Then I successfully linked to it from the course menu. The drawback is that the link works no differently from the way we have links now: the content shows up but without the course menu. My proposed solution may not be a worthwhile workaround. I will continue to explore.

  6. B, you are right about the top frame staying put. I think we should do what you suggest: modify the header.cfms to remove the gray bars and "false" breadcrumb. That's a simple solution. Should we do the same to the syllabi files? If not for Aug 30, then maybe during the fall?
